Writing To Change The World

Changing the world is something many people have as a driving power for what they do. Is it not in some way a goal for every writer? Words and writing can be a way to change the world. This is the subject for Mary Pipher in her book Writing to Change the World.

As Pipher says in the book we all understand the world from our own point and good writing help readers build larger frames and connects them.

What is the reason behind writing a book or any other text? It can be just to get out what you carry inside you, but mostly it is to connect with other people. We hope someone will read our text and react in some way. We might want them to share our ideas or we might want them to buy something from us, all depending on our aim and message.

Maybe we even have a hope that we can change someones mind in a matter that is close to our heart. If that happens we have already changed the world. Because we can only change the world one person at a time. Changing the world is not about big revolutions, it is about small steps of change.

The book Writing to Change the World is divided into three main parts, where the first part What We Alone Can Say focuses on an author as an individual. Pipher is among other things stressing the importance of finding one?s own voice. Different authors have different voices and different ways of writing.

Some need a quiet place to write, while others are able to write almost anywhere.

Pipher has also worked as a therapist and in one of the chapters she makes an interesting Assessment Report on Mr. USA. To find out his condition you have to read the book.

The second part The Writing Process is about the challenges and rewards an author meet in writing. As with everything else in life writing comes easy for someone, while others have to struggle to get the words on paper, Some writers can toss off pearls at whim; most of us, however, are trudgers.

There are many stages during the writing process, such as wrestling with the demons, overcoming resistance and living in hope. But is an exciting journey.

In the third part Calls To Action she is looking at different ways of getting ones message out. Writing is not only about books and articles, there is also letters, blogs, music and so on. There has probably never been more ways for people to express themselves than today.

Pipher freely uses her own experiences in the book, which gives it a personal and close to the reader touch. It is a guide to writing that also a more novice writer can use.

In changing the world through writing the book Writing to Change the World is a step into its own aim.
